5 Habits of Powerful People

Screen shot 2013-03-14 at 9.28.31 PM

Habits are addictive practices that can either enhance your life or keep you stuck in life-defeating patterns that lead to mediocrity.

Powerful people maintain powerful habits that propel them forward and help them to access their greatest self. Here are five simple habits that you can adopt and incorporate into your life.

1. Stillness– Your mind is full of chatter and fires off anywhere from 40,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day. Stillness helps you to evaluate, redirect, and cancel out thoughts that aren’t serving you and your purpose, and are life-draining and toxic. Challenge yourself to sit still for two minutes and hold one thought. Start with holding a word in your mind, such as love, God, purity, peace, or beauty. As you get better at sitting still, improve your time by 30-second intervals. When you do this, find a comfortable chair and sit up straight. Feel your toes, your hands and your heat beat. Get still as stillness will help you to become more of who you’re created to be and less of who you currently are. Adopting this mindset tool will help you to become stronger and helps to establish presence.

2. Writing– I write constantly because there is power in writing down your thoughts. I’ve been known to capture ideas and write them on the back of receipts, napkins, in journals, on my iPhone/ iPad, on scratch paper, and even in my bible. I’m always writing something. Writing is a powerful exercise that helps you to unveil hidden thoughts, beliefs, and creative ideas to help you lead a more dynamic life. Writing helps you make meaning out of your world and allows for you to express yourself in ways that speaking or thinking can’t. The power of this habit can’t be stressed enough.

Where do you write your thoughts down?

3. Exercising- I’m still working on this one, but movement is extremely helpful. When you move you’re aiding your body in the flow of oxygen, giving your digestive system a boost, helping blood flow through your body. All of this helps with lifting the fog from your mind and increasing clarity. When you run you release worries and doubts, and you learn to push through your self-imposed limits.

What’s your favorite exercise?

4. Reading- I strongly believe in having a balanced reading diet. You should have a healthy dose of fiction and non-fiction in your personal canon. In my library you can find books on law, government, social issues, spiritual dynamics, personal finance, and historical books. Your library is a reflection of your values, thoughts, and mindset. Say that with me: My library is a reflection of my values, thoughts, and mindset. Literacy gives you access to dynamic thoughts, propels you into conversation and thoughtful discourse, challenges your thinking, increases your discernment, and aids in personal growth and development. The great Jim Rohn said: “All readers are leaders.” He was the grandfather of personal development. Your leadership capacity is dependent upon this strategy.

What was the last book you read? How did it help you to become a better person? What lessons did you learn?

5. Thinking– Thinking is an underrated activity, especially in our “speak your mind and say what you want to say” culture. Deep thinking allows you to mull over ideas and meditate on your thoughts so that you can pull out important messages. Incorporating time within your day to think about the matters of your heart is just as important as taking big action. This type of thinking will allow you to make better decisions, download creative ideas, and establish scripts on how to proceed and succeed in different areas of your life. Most people are afraid to sit with their thoughts and balk at the idea of taking time out of their day to think about something on purpose, but this method increases your brilliance and puts you in a class of your own.

What’s the difference between stillness and thinking?

When you take time out of your day to think, you’re bringing a thought into your mind to grapple with, where as stillness is about letting go of your thoughts and allowing new thoughts and ideas to come to you.

The goal is to act thoughtfully instead of reacting to your world.

I’m Sick of It… The Truth About Passion

Today’s article came from a deep place. I didn’t want to send this out because I knew some people would be upset. But I’m yanking the covers off the lie that’s prevailing in the marketplace. Honestly, I’m sick of it.

Scenario 1

We’ve all seen it: the auditions for American Idol. During the interview, a young woman speaks passionately about her dream of becoming a singer. Her story is absolutely amazing and you even find yourself tearing up after hearing her express her desire to sing  with such emotion. You’re convinced that she might win just by her introduction alone. Suddenly, the moment arrives when she has to sing. But after she sings the first note…

…you’re slightly disappointed.

Actually, you’re shocked. Maybe even confused.

You ask yourself: “How can she be so passionate about singing and yet, she can’t sing?”

If you’re watching with a friend, you give each other that look and shake your heads.

The truth: She’s confused passion with purpose.

Scenario 2

Michelle is multi-talented; in fact, everything she touches turns to gold. She’s competent at a number of things and has even won numerous accolades and awards for her ability to dominate in her industry. She’s heard about a great opportunity to start a new business in cooking. She knows that she can learn how to do anything (within her means, of course,) and she’s interested in this new venture. Everybody knows that cooking is something that brings her alive. But, she refuses to give it a chance.  She’d prefer to do what looks “good” to everyone else.

The truth: She’s confused purpose with ability.

Does this sound like anyone you might know?

What’s the Problem?

In the personal development and success/business coaching industry, there is a lot of talk about finding your passion, and unfortunately too many women are falling for this “passion trap.”   What’s even worse, is that these women (not you) start to mimic the so-called high-achievers in  search of  their own success and miss out on what they are YOUniquely purposed to do.

I hate to say this but, it bothers me, beyond irritation to see a women relinguish her creative power for synthetic power. She abdicates her purpose for passion.

Look..

I’m not opposed to passion, but I’d like to submit to you that passion should not be the litmus test for purpose or finding your calling.

Trust me, I understand how passion can be an indication of what you’re called to do, but it’s not (repeat after me) the basis for determining your calling.

Why?

Because its possible to be passionate about the wrong thing. In scenario one, the girl was clearly passionate. She had a strong, intense desire to become a famous singer, yet she wasn’t equipped with the skills to express a note.

In scenario number two, the girl was successful, yet unsatisfied. She made good the enemy of her great.

Who knows what kind of life she’s missing out on because she’s settling for good or passion?

Passion is an emotion. Emotions give us some information but they are not always true.

Passion is a very strong feeling; an intense desire for something and many people make major decisions based on how “passionate” they feel.  But passion can steer you wrong if you’re not careful.

Passion alone can lead you to believe you’re called to sing, start a new business, move to another country, or start a new relationship. And six months to a year later, you will ultimately find that passion alone is not enough to keep you satisfied, and equipped for the road to success.

That’s the problem with passion – it doesn’t guarantee fulfillment, equip you for the long haul, nor does it challenge you to  serve others. The only thing that can bring about all of that and more  is purpose

In fact, what all human beings really want is purpose.

What is Purpose?

Purpose is a deep call and a nagging burden that you have to solve a persistent problem and bring healing to that area or to a group of people.

It’s not always fancy, but it does feel like “fire shut up in your bones”.

A true purpose will give you:

  1. A Deep Satisfaction – When you’re in purpose you’ll feel it from the bottom of your heart to the whole of your spirit. You’ll have an undeniable twinkle in your eye, and every part of your being will feel deeply satisfied. Their are no strings attached.
  2. Purity – Your call should bring you to a place of purity; a place where you seek to wash yourself of unrighteousness and cleanse yourself of wrong thinking and neediness from others. Purpose is the ultimate personal development course. As you step into purpose you’re bound to come alive and live the life you were created to live.
  3. Freedom – Purpose will give you freedom to express who you are without trying to prove yourself to others. In purpose, you’re not trying to find validation or seek attention. You’re simply free to use your gifts and talents to serve others without expectation.   *SERVICE is the key .
  4. Insight – Purpose will give you insight for change and will enable you to be a problem solver/change agent/revolutionary thinker through your job, product, or services.
  5. Wholeness –  Women in purpose always feel whole. They know that God is the center of who they are and they view him as the source of all opportunity, responsibility, and growth.

Simply stated, your purpose will enable you  to access your God-self (aka your best self and your greatest self.)

Ahhhh.

Now that’s what I want. Purpose. Not passion.

I want the ability to be my best self, serve others, and shine bright as a supernova.

You might still be wondering: “Shouldn’t I feel passionate about my job, business, or calling?”  My answer is yes, but I want you to remember this:

Passion does not yield purpose, but purpose always brings about passion.

In my next article, I’ll be giving you the seven elements for finding your purpose. But for now I want you to tell me what you’re passionately purposed to do?

What Confident Women Know: 5 Tips To Get Out of Your Own Way

I’ve been running Distinguished Learning Group, my educational company, as a side hustle for the past few years and I became quite the happy camper (ahem, I mean happy teacher) making an extra $15-$20k a year, plus my salary – bringing me very close to six figures. (Not bad.) I was totally convinced that I would teach for ten years, transition into administration, and then become a superintendent and lead a district of schools. But last October, something happened. My life plans came to a screeching halt when two of my biggest passions converged and I learned something that all confident women know.

It’s almost like I fell off of one plane of desire and landed in a new world where my mind was instantly expanded and I saw the possibilities that lay beyond even my wildest imagination.

In short, I felt an urgent need to really step up my game and jump into business full time. I was pressed by the purpose of calling women who are smart, powerful, and splendid to RISE to new heights of being and dominion and boldly become all that God had purposed them to be. And yet, there was an issue. For years, I had been known as Mrs. Queenie: Extraordinary Teacher, Extraordinary Results. I questioned myself and I even questioned God, trying to figure out how working with women measured up or made sense, because I was a teacher of children.

Finally, the heavens opened up (not really) and it dawned on me that for years I’d been working with children, but I’d also been coaching and mentoring their mothers, not just in parenting but also in pursuing their personal dreams and pushing them to the edge to unleash their personal power and potential. And then I remembered that for six years, I had presided over my church’s Young Adult Women’s ministry as well.

A sudden “Aha!” moment gave way to immense clarity.

It finally made sense. God was weaving together a bigger vision for my life, but I was limited by the title of being a “teacher”. I had let this title define yet limit me and who I had the opportunity to become. Many of us do that. We become highly successful and known for being and doing one thing and we forget that we have the chance to wear the “coat of many colors” and the opportunity to tap into the tapestry of our gifts and talents. (Think Oprah, Kimora  & Beyonce)

At that moment, I was full of excitement, eagerness and complete “overwhelm”. I was blown away by this massive call and my ability to trust such a great vision and realized that confident women know that you can’t limit yourself to yesterday’s success. Confident women readily wear many hats, and dance to different songs. Confident women aren’t afraid of stepping into their full power. They know that:

“When [they] stand before God at the end of [their] life, [They] would hope that [they] would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.” – Erma Bombeck.

It’s time for you to get out of your own way. It’s time for you to grow into the next and more refined version of yourself. Since my expansion last year, I now fully understood how my work in the classroom with children was tightly connected to me working with women. If women lead powerful, passion-filled lives that touch the core of their soul purpose, it will have resounding implications for their children who will witness their evolution; helping them to dream and lead in the world with the same type of vigor.

Are there two areas of your life that can converge to make you more explosive and more dynamic than ever?

Are you afraid, or find yourself questioning God for how your personal elevation will happen?

Tips for Getting Out of Your Own Way:

1. Integration-Fully integrate parts of your life that seem separate or disconnected. I merged teaching with my love for working with women.

2. Think Like a Miracle Worker- Miracle workers know that no-thing is impossible. (This is my secret power.)

3. Envision- Take 5 minutes each day to imagine yourself beyond your current level of success. See yourself helping others and supporting them in their dreams. As you paint a picture in your mind, continue to expand it and make it more dynamic. Continue this until you feel a release.

3. Follow the Yellow Brick Road- Your life path is the clue to what you’re called to do. Think back over your life and assess yourself for the tools, skills and qualifications that you’ve gained.  This allows you to see all that you have to offer. (When I work with my clients, I use the Talent Tracker to help map and track their gifts and talents.)

4. Ask for a bigger vision: You have not because you ask not. Don’t play small. Step up. Think big and play big.

5. Get Uncomfortable- Don’t limit yourself to your current success: There is more inside of you. Release it and let it go.

Now I’ve got a little challenge for you…

Leave a comment and share which strategy you’re going to try or which tip spoke to you.

Can You See? You Are Brilliant, Beautiful and Fabulous?

I can see your power, your strength, your courage, your leadership, your compassion, your impeccability, your unshakable spirit, and most of all, your love and care for all humanity.

But can YOU see all of this?

When I was younger I used to get pounding migraines. The pain would shoot through my eyes and travel to the base of my neck. The pain was intense and excruciating, so much so that I was forced to turn off all the lights, close the blinds, and ensure that all light was wiped out of the room. The only thing that would ease my pain was being in a pitch-black room. Those days of migraines are so vivid, my lying across the bed with tears running down my face hoping that the pain would subside.

All I wanted was to be able to see with clarity; to see without he pain. Eventually, I’d curl up and fall asleep. And, despite the soothing feeling of the dark room, what I really wanted was to be able to see. I yearned for my vision, but the light still hurt.

Many of you find yourself standing in the light, yet you’re still unable to see. You’re seeking clarity around your purpose, your calling, and asking yourself, “How am I going to do this?” Others of you would rather hide, reject your greatness, and ignore the call that’s been placed upon your life because you don’t think you’re ready to step into your full power and live a magnificent life.

Marianne Williamson said: “It is our light more than our darkness which scares us. We ask ourselves – who are we to be brilliant, beautiful, talented, and fabulous.

But honestly, who are you to not be so?”

You see – you can escape to your own darkness, hoping not to deal with the light and truth of who you are, and relax in the illusionary calm that it brings. Or, you can RISE to new heights of greatness and soar.

Can you see yourself yet?

The power to elevate your life is all about vision. Vision is the ability to see. What you see is a reflection of who you think you are. What you see is what you believe and value.

Vision is the keystone to living a life of radiance and fulfilling your passion. You see, it wasn’t the darkness that soothed my pain; it was that my eyes weren’t yet adjusted to the light. Light is power. Light is clarity. Light is certainty. When you operate from this place you embrace your leadHERship. Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.

I want you to Dream Big; See Big, and Embrace the fullness of who you are.

I am calling you to see your greatness because what you see dictates where you’re going. In the end, seeing really is believing. Remember: “We are limited, not by our abilities, but by our vision.”

Share your vision for your life below and let us know about your big SPARKLY goal(s).

Self-Quiz: Are You Too Busy?

It is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?” –Henry David Thoreau

Time is the great equalizer. Everybody gets the same amount: 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour and although it would be pretty cool to say,”I’ll take 24 hours on Monday, 36 hours on Tuesday and 15 hours for Wednesday.” Unfortunately, we can’t save time, accumulate or rearrange it. No. It doesn’t work like that. You can’t turn it off or on.

And, it can’t be replaced.

But these days, it seems as if the lament of not having enough time has become a national anthem. Everywhere people find themselves constantly in a rush, over-booked and over-scheduled with no time off. And, I must admit I’ve been in the same situation. But, I realized that doing too much and being too busy can be unproductive and cut you off from experiencing vibrant relationships and living a healthy lifestyle. Though it may not always seem so, how we fill our time and how we spend it is our choice.

Answer the following questions to discover if you’re caught up in the “too-busy” cycle.

  1. I constantly find myself doing “urgent” things and trying to catch up.
  2. I allow myself to drift into obligations when I don’t know how much time or energy they’ll require.
  3. I find myself running from when I get up in the morning until I go to bed at night. I’m always tired and never feel like I accomplished enough.
  4. I seldom schedule a day off for myself and when I do, I tend to fill it with activities.
  5. I don’t make time for “self-care” activities: physical exercise, nurturing or “pampering” myself, cultural stimulation, spiritual well-being, learning something new, playing, or simply doing nothing.
  6. I seldom have time to do the things I really love.
  7. My work and project areas are cluttered with “I’ll look at this later” stacks and “to-do” piles.
  8. I often miscalculate how long certain activities will take.
  9. I often miss deadlines or work long hours to meet a deadline.
  10. I respond to interruptions such as phone calls, faxes, email, beepers and pagers, and allow them to take me off track.
  11. I try to keep things in my head rather than making lists. If I do make a daily “to-do” list, it’s impossible to complete in a day.
  12. I tend to move from one urgent thing to the next, rather than working toward specific goals and objectives.
  13. I find myself constantly wishing I had more time or projecting an imaginary future when I have more time, making comments such as “as soon as…” or “next year…”
  14. I spend time running errands and rushing because I didn’t plan well enough.
  15. I spend time doing things I could pay someone else to do.
  16. I often do things because I “should,” or continue to do things that no longer fit who I am.
  17. Other people complain that my schedule doesn’t allow enough time for them.

Post your thoughts below, are you too busy?

The Power of Focus

In order to go confidently in the direction of your dreams. You have to focus. FOCUS is the ability to hone in your talents, and gifts and give complete attention to one idea, one project or one person at a time. Focus is what allows you take in the project through all of your senses and get feedback from the (project)problem in order to engage in creative problem solving. Often times we are trying to multi-task and the truth is multi-tasking is not possible. If you are multi-tasking I can guarantee you that something isn’t getting all of your attention and something isn’t being done with efficiency, accuracy, or detail. This week I’m challenging you to focus on one goal without distraction from other things.

The Power of Asking For What You Want

What if I told you that the deep desire that you’ve been incubating in you heart could be yours today? Does that sound enticing? I’m sure it does, but let’s cut to the chase and get to the point. If you really want what you say you want then you better open your mouth and ask for it. Asking for what you want is a powerful act that can send strong ripples through your life. While it may seem simple enough, four things need to be in place first:

1.Know what you want
2.Fully believe you deserve it
3.Be prepared to accept the answer “No”
4.Communicate your request with clarity

What Do You Want?
Wants emerge from needs you are experiencing, for example: the need to be heard, the need for respect, expedience, beauty, and intimacy. Knowing the need helps you be clear about what you are requesting. It’s helpful to distinguish between needs that move us towards well-being and those that never really bring happiness, such as the desire for approval or to be right.

Believe You Deserve It
If you think you can’t have what you want, take time to examine your limiting beliefs. Make a list of all the things you want, then write all the reasons you can’t have them. Are these reasons really true? Have you made decisions about “reality” or made assumptions about others that keep you from even asking for what you want? When you ask people for what you want, you offer them the opportunity to contribute, something we all wish to do.

Prepare for No
Asking for what you truly want honors your experience and brings you into deeper alignment with the essence of who you are. You connect with your own humanness and know where you stand. Having asked, it may no longer be so important that you get exactly what you want; the asking, itself, is empowering.

Effective Communication
Tony Robbins says, “The answer is always ‘no’ if you don’t ask.” True! But asking is more effective when you follow these guidelines for effective communication:

1. State your need clearly, followed by your request.
2. Ask for what you want in the present (not “I wanted you to help me with the kids yesterday.”)
3. Ask for what you do want, not what you don’t want. (“I want you to spend time with me,” not “I don’t want you to be at work so much.”)
4. Ask in the form of a request, rather than a demand.
5. Detach from the outcome.

Remember that empowerment comes in the asking. When you ask for what you want, you have planted not only the seeds of better communication, but of more clearly knowing who you are, which is present in what you want.

Tell me if this article resonates with you. When was the last time you asked for something that you wanted?  I’ll be commenting back to your post.
