Self-Quiz: Are You Too Busy?

It is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?” –Henry David Thoreau

Time is the great equalizer. Everybody gets the same amount: 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour and although it would be pretty cool to say,”I’ll take 24 hours on Monday, 36 hours on Tuesday and 15 hours for Wednesday.” Unfortunately, we can’t save time, accumulate or rearrange it. No. It doesn’t work like that. You can’t turn it off or on.

And, it can’t be replaced.

But these days, it seems as if the lament of not having enough time has become a national anthem. Everywhere people find themselves constantly in a rush, over-booked and over-scheduled with no time off. And, I must admit I’ve been in the same situation. But, I realized that doing too much and being too busy can be unproductive and cut you off from experiencing vibrant relationships and living a healthy lifestyle. Though it may not always seem so, how we fill our time and how we spend it is our choice.

Answer the following questions to discover if you’re caught up in the “too-busy” cycle.

  1. I constantly find myself doing “urgent” things and trying to catch up.
  2. I allow myself to drift into obligations when I don’t know how much time or energy they’ll require.
  3. I find myself running from when I get up in the morning until I go to bed at night. I’m always tired and never feel like I accomplished enough.
  4. I seldom schedule a day off for myself and when I do, I tend to fill it with activities.
  5. I don’t make time for “self-care” activities: physical exercise, nurturing or “pampering” myself, cultural stimulation, spiritual well-being, learning something new, playing, or simply doing nothing.
  6. I seldom have time to do the things I really love.
  7. My work and project areas are cluttered with “I’ll look at this later” stacks and “to-do” piles.
  8. I often miscalculate how long certain activities will take.
  9. I often miss deadlines or work long hours to meet a deadline.
  10. I respond to interruptions such as phone calls, faxes, email, beepers and pagers, and allow them to take me off track.
  11. I try to keep things in my head rather than making lists. If I do make a daily “to-do” list, it’s impossible to complete in a day.
  12. I tend to move from one urgent thing to the next, rather than working toward specific goals and objectives.
  13. I find myself constantly wishing I had more time or projecting an imaginary future when I have more time, making comments such as “as soon as…” or “next year…”
  14. I spend time running errands and rushing because I didn’t plan well enough.
  15. I spend time doing things I could pay someone else to do.
  16. I often do things because I “should,” or continue to do things that no longer fit who I am.
  17. Other people complain that my schedule doesn’t allow enough time for them.

Before You Quit Your Job

I’ve just wrapped a seven-week summer vacation, and Wednesday was my first day back to work. Yep, work. Some people dread going to work, but I absolutely love my job. Don’t get me wrong, I had a magnificent summer and during that time I had the opportunity to develop:

  • The plan for my digital magazine, The Success Maven
  • The Blueprint for two life & business coaching programs
  • A waiting list for Radiant YOUniversity
  • Signature strategies to help my clients achieve clarity and a plan of action to move them towards their ideal life.

And,

I delivered over forty hours of coaching with the Clarity Call Formula. Above all, I spent countless hours checking things off my to-do list. Whew! I didn’t even mention that I also ran and operated Camp DNI, a four-week design thinking camp with my company, Distinguished Learning Group, LLC.

As you can see this Success Maven, gets it done. I ain’t playin no games. (Lol)

By all accounts, I had a “You go girl,” type of summer. I operated in my full capacity and stretched myself in every way possible. It was incredible, and as you can see I dedicated my summer to building programs, courses and teaching high-achieving women to “Master their Mindset, & EXPAND their Greatness,” so that they can live their creative dreams out loud and make money.

Can you believe that I accomplished all of this in seven weeks? Some of my clients even reached some of their benchmark goals sooner than they expected. Wow! It’s so incredible to see someone else’s dream unfold right before your eyes. God’s plan is certainly working in my life, and I am grateful for that.

All of this sounds like heaven. And, it is, but going back to work could bring out the bellyacher in me, but instead it’s brought out a more joyful Queenie.

Why? Because my job is my small business loan. A small business loan is the capital needed to finance improvements or start a business. This summer I used my salary to fund my company, because I understand that SheRISES will not grow simply  because I’m passionate about it. I have to invest in the company, and the most efficient way for me to do that is to use cash flow that I get from my day job.

I know that we live in a culture where entrepreneurs are being celebrated and quitting a job is supposedly the sexist and most powerful thing since the invention of the iPad. Okay, I’m being silly, but you get the point.

I understand that having the “time” to work on your dream is so necessary, but I also know that having all the time in the world and no cash flow is painful. I’m asking you to develop a plan and strategize before you quit your job. I’m inviting you to think about how you can leverage your job and use it to propel your business forward.

I know you’re full of passion and that you really believe that God has given you the most extraordinary idea, or purpose, but you have to remember to use wisdom and discernment. As you’re reading this I can hear you saying, “But, I hate my job,” and ” I know this isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing with my life.”

Look, I know you’re ready to live a freedom-based lifestyle.

And, I genuinely believe that you have the birthright to live your creative dreams out loud.  And yes, you should be your own boss and make money on your own terms. But, I want you to know that business is a process. You need to feed it, and develop it. Plus, you have bills and responsibilities to yourself and others, and you can’t just jump up and quit your job because you have a bright idea that came from heaven (touché)

Here are some tip/strategies for you:

1. Don’t despise your current job: Energy is everything. While you’re working on your job, acknowledge the opportunity that you have to invest in your company. Shifting your mindset will do wonders for you. It will accelerate your transition into your business or creative dream full time and open up massive opportunities.

2. Your job is your greatest asset: It enables you to purchase different platforms, hire (if necessary), fund start up cost, and create a powerful brand.  Remember building a business costs money. I didn’t say a lot of money, but it does cost $$ money. If someone tells you that it doesn’t, their  lying.

3.In the early stages of your business cash is king (along with strategy, foresight and creativity): Having a steady and substantial cash flow come in from my job afforded me the opportunity to purchase needed software tools, and programs to put SheRISES in the position to compete in the market.

4. Having a job doesn’t make you less of an entrepreneur: it gives you the fuel to become a better entrepreneur.

As I head to work each day, I know that I’m doing what I love while simultaneously funding my other dream and goal of creating a global brand for women who want to use their gifts to change the world.

I hope this article encourages you to know that you can build a business while maintaining a full-time job.

The Power of Focus

In order to go confidently in the direction of your dreams. You have to focus. FOCUS is the ability to hone in your talents, and gifts and give complete attention to one idea, one project or one person at a time. Focus is what allows you take in the project through all of your senses and get feedback from the (project)problem in order to engage in creative problem solving. Often times we are trying to multi-task and the truth is multi-tasking is not possible. If you are multi-tasking I can guarantee you that something isn’t getting all of your attention and something isn’t being done with efficiency, accuracy, or detail. This week I’m challenging you to focus on one goal without distraction from other things.

Capture Your Life: A Notebook, A Pen, & Your Million Dollar Ideas

Opportunity ADD plagues most if not all high-achieving women. Once you’re in the creative flow ideas begin to pour forth and are limitless. Here is the key, you must pick one or two ideas or three at most, to throw your energy into. I know this is challenging but until you grow your ideas to a mature state where other people can help manage and develop them, your doing your ide

a and the people they serve a disservice. Your million dollar ideas are about about effecting people in a positive manner. They are also profit generating entity that will positively affect your wallet. But, how do you stop yourself from moving from one idea to the next?1. Identify your mission and purpose & abilities: The idea that takes the least amount of energy will feed into the other ideas at some point. Start there.

2. Keep an idea journal: Jot down all of your million dollar ideas and map out all of the details that you have about that idea. Once you get the idea out of your mind your can clear up some brain space to create, build and expand your main idea, mission or movement. When the mind is filled with ideas/information that is not filed or sorted it swirls around in your mind. You must capture and sort the information immediately.

3. Remember: Multi-tasking/Multi-anything is a myth. You only have a 100% to give to any given thing that you are doing at the moment. There is no such thing as 200%.

You have to properly manage your energy and know that for every idea, event, & situation that you take on mentally, physically and spiritually- your ability to give 100% automatically diminishes.

I ♥ using composition notebooks to capture my ideas. I have so many of them. Once I capture my ideas- I have the mental capacity to focus on what matters at the moment.

What do you use to capture and sort your ideas?

My #1 Strategy for Getting Things Done

As a wife, a business owner and a lead teacher in the classroom, I have to have a  system that helps me to manage all of my tasks and get things done with accuracy and efficiency. But, it wasn’t until last year that I really started to manage myself with a real system that helped me to use my time wisely, manage my energy and properly prepare for all the ‘things’ that I have to get done.

My #1 secret to getting things done is the
The Getting Things Done System by  David Allen.

The Getting Things Done System (GTD) is a system for keeping your mind clear of clutter and helps your to learn how to take action on everything that comes in and process it so that it can be handled.

This allows  your mind to be free from REMEMBERING and CLEAR to create.

Up until a year ago, I thought I could manage my life with  rinky dinky
to- do list, or by juggling (what I was secretly calling managing)  my day to day tasks in my mind.

I’m ashamed to share this but it’s true:

  • Sometimes I’d  put my dates in my calendar on my Blackberry, but something was always being overlooked or double booked,
  •  I was trying to remember the grocery list, to pick up the cleaners and to get my oil changed.
  • All this while trying to create curriculum, programs and services and be completely present as a wife, professional &  entrepreneur.
  • My system was not failproof- it was an EPIC FAIL.

“If you don’t pay appropriate attention to what has your attention, it will take more of your attention than it deserves.”

This system changed my life.

  • I’ve increased my output abilities by 200%
  • I’ve been able to create four times more in the past year
  • I’m able to be more present and focus with
  • I’ve increased my revenues by 50%  (amazing)

Now, I ask myself three important questions when I receive mail, or a project.

Three-Questions To manage my projects
1. Is it actionable? No! Then I trash it, refer it  or put it in my SOMEDAY File
2. Should I process it? Yes! Then, I  delegate (can’t do yet), defer (calendar it or Hotlist it)
3. Will it take less than 2 minutes? Then I Immediately DO IT.

Save yourself your energy and manage yourself by

GETTING THINGS DONE!!

I downloaded the THINGS APP on my iPad and on my iPhone. This App will save your life.
